Students from Berkeley Springs High School's Experimental Design class teamed with the Warm Springs Watershed Association to weed the trail going through the wetlands. The trail serves as a vital source of education as to the reasons why the wetlands are important.
The wetlands are important to the health of our run because: 1) They serve as the “kidneys” of a drainage area, filtering out pollutants and preventing them from reaching the Run. 2) Wetlands capture and hold stormwater, thus reducing the volume and velocity of runoff reaching the Run. 3) Reduced volume and velocity of stormwater entering the Run helps to reduce the risk and severity of flooding downstream. 4) Wetlands provide a place for native plants and animals to live and grow. 5) In a well functioning wetland, there is a balance is maintained in which, for example, birds, fish, frogs and tadpoles eat mosquitoes larvae and adults.
